Death Toll in Attack at Russian Concert Hall Tops 130 as Suspects Detained Russian authorities said they had detained 11 people in connection with a terrorist attack on a concert hall in a Moscow suburb, as the death toll from Friday night’s violence rose to 133, according to investigators. Islamist extremist group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the assault, saying it had struck “a strong blow” in its campaign against “countries fighting Islam.” U.S. officials—who said they warned Russia earlier this month of intelligence indicating an impending terrorist threat—said they believe a branch of Islamic State based in Afghanistan, known as ISIS-K, was behind the attack. Moscow, which was publicly dismissive of Washington’s concerns, is now confronting a potentially serious new threat as the Kremlin fights a costly war of attrition against Ukraine, which Russia invaded in 2022. On Saturday, Putin sought to connect the perpetrators of the concert-hall attack to Kyiv, saying some had been apprehended while attempting to escape to Ukraine. He offered no evidence to back his assertions. Ukraine has denied any involvement in the attack. An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned the attack could be used as a pretext by Moscow to mobilize more troops and scale up Russia’s war effort. Putin, who was re-elected last week to another six-year term, made security at home and abroad a theme of his election campaign, telling Russians that he was the only leader able to keep the country safe.
